The University of Cape Town Irma Stern Museum in Rosebank was established in 1971 and showcases a permanent collection of art by the renowned South African artist.

Irma Stern's art has sold for record amounts such as her Bahora Girl which sold for a whopping R26.7 million. That record was broken in 2011 when one of her other pieces sold for R34 million in London.

A visit to the home and studio of this major South African artist is an absolute treat and must-visit for every art lover. You are able to get a real glimpse into her life as you walk around her home and explore her paintings and drawings, journals, sculptures and ceramics, and collection of artefacts that she acquired from her travels in Europe and Africa.

Stern lived in the house for nearly 40 years. She moved into The Firs in 1927 and lived there until her death. Many of the rooms in the house are still furnished the exact way she arranged them. Even her palettes and paints are displayed exactly as she left them.

The gallery upstairs houses art by contemporary South African artists. They hold regular exhibitions and their works are for sale. You are also able to purchase books about Irma Stern's life and art as well as calendars, posters and gift wrap.

Be sure to visit the museum's official website for news about all the latest exhibitions, workshops and books.
