Many South Africans are switching from ADSL to fibre. Find out which internet connection is best for you.
Fibre and ADSL refer to the two different internet lines that are now both available in South Africa.
The major difference between the two lines has to do with the speed of your connection. Essentially, ADSL uses telephone lines to transmit data and that means that the further you are from the exchange, the slower your speeds will be. Fibre, on the other hand, uses fibre optic cables to transmit data which means that data has the potential to travel at the speed of light and isn't affected by your distance from the exchange.
ADSL has speeds that max out at 40Mbps whereas the maximum speed for Fibre is at 200Mbps.
Both ADSL and Fibre connections now have capped or uncapped options.

Budget-friendly
Available in most areas
For basic connectivity for home use, including gaming, ADSL is perfectly fine.
The further your home is from the Telkom exchange, the slower your speed will be.
ADSL has plenty of reliability issues and require a lot of maintenance.
You need a landline to access the internet.
Fibre
It is not affected by electricity so there will be less interference on the lines.
Speed will not be affected by your distance from the exchange.
You do not need a landline to access the internet.
It is not available in all locations yet.
It is fairly costly in comparison.
