The Rainbow Puppet Theatre, hosted by The Constantia Waldorf School, is the country’s only dedicated puppet theatre.
Puppet shows are one of the earliest forms of storytelling, and with shows inspired by fairy tales such as Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel, the theatre is a great activity for kids. They have custom made sets, props, décor and over 300 handcrafted puppets with sound effects and live music.
The playhouse was established in 1992 and is now run by former Waldorf School pupil Alison Fenton.
“Everything we do, we ensure that it is true, beautiful, good and honest. Everything is done with the child in mind. The shows are spiritually uplifting and magical,” says Alison. “All the stories have meanings behind them. Like Little Red Riding Hood, for example, represents not straying from the path, and the wolf symbolises greed. So, in that case, we taught children how to overcome that greed in themselves and how to identify it in the world. So all the stories have messages aimed at children.”
The theatre is the perfect location for children’s birthday parties. The venue can accommodate up to 60 kids and there are beautiful gardens where they can run wild and explore. You are also welcome to share a picnic on the grounds.
There is also a mobile puppet show option where puppet shows can be hosted at your home for parties and functions.
The puppet shows are held every Saturday morning and their collection of sixteen stories are alternated monthly.
Parking is free and ample.
Cost: Entry is R20 for both adults and children and tickets can be bought at the venue.
Opening Hours: The theatre is open every Saturday morning. Show times are 10am and 11:15am.
