Dana Bay Beach is one of 118 beaches situated in the Western Cape region, 336,5 km away from its centre, the city of Cape Town. Whale season is from August to October and visitors have the opportunity to see Bryde's whales and humpback whales. You will also have the honour of being able to view Southern right whales which are the rarest breed of all the large whale species and among the rarest of all marine mammal species. Adult Southern right whales can measure up to 15.5 metres and weigh as much as 60 tons. Females are more significant than males and calves are four metres in length at birth.

A way to identify a Right whale is by its stocky body, lack of a dorsal fin and callosities which are raised patches of roughened skin. Their tails are broad, black and deeply notched with a smooth trailing edge.

Other wildlife you may encounter on your trip to Dana Bay Beach includes bushbuck, steenbok, mongooses and Cape francolins which roam freely due to the conservancy status given to the area.

Dana Bay Beach also has prolific birdlife which includes a colony of black oystercatchers, Cape gannet, white-breasted cormorant, Cape cormorant, grey heron, hadeda ibis, black-shouldered kite, jackal buzzard, peregrine falcon, rock kestrel, Cape spurfowl, helmeted guineafowl and the blue crane to name a few. These are just a few of the 85 species of birds that grace the area of Dana Bay.

Due to the conservancy status given, the beach is extremely well taken care of and so visitors can expect a clean and spacious coastline with crystal turquoise water and golden fine sand.
