Discover the world of snakes at Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary

Category Area Focus

Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary is a popular tourist destination located in the beautiful coastal town of Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. This sanctuary is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes and reptiles and provides visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about these fascinating creatures up close.

The start of Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary

The sanctuary was established in 2003 by Michael Caithness, who is passionate about snakes and reptiles. Caithness saw the need for a facility where snakes and reptiles could be rehabilitated and released back into the wild, as well as a place where the public could learn more about these often-misunderstood creatures.

Initially, the sanctuary was quite small, with the majority of snakes residing in a dome and a handful of outdoor enclosures. However, over the course of numerous years, it has undergone significant expansion and is now one of the top destinations to visit in the Western Cape.

Now, the park has eight dedicated staff members who impart their expertise and oversee the immaculate maintenance of all the resident creatures within the sprawling 20-hectare forest sanctuary.

What to look forward to on your visit

One of the highlights of a visit to Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary is the guided tour, which is led by knowledgeable and experienced staff members. During the tour, visitors are able to see a variety of snakes and reptiles up close and learn about their habitats, behaviour, and diets. The staff members are also happy to answer any questions visitors may have, and provide valuable insights into the world of snakes and reptiles.

In addition to the guided tour, Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary also offers a forest walk where you can experience the indigenous forest of the Garden Route through two optional short hikes.

Another popular attraction at Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary is the reptile park, which is home to a variety of animals including Nile crocodiles, Monitor lizards and tortoises. Visitors are able to see these animals up close and learn about their behaviour and habitats.
