Like many towns in Mpumalanga, Evander's history is strongly linked to mining. The town was originally part of the Bethal district. She was the wife of Peter Maltitz Anderson, one of the directors of the corporation. Gold mining companies remain a pivotal part of the town. In 2019, for example, Evander Gold Mine donated libraries to four local schools.
