Sandton Central has a rich history dating back to indigenous populations such as the Tswana and Sotho. Later, Europeans moved into the area, and the Esterhuysen family set up a home on the farm Zandfontein. The farms Zandfontein, Driefontein, and Rietfontein were significant in the area's development. Sandton began to evolve in the 1960s when it became a distinct municipality, drawing wealthy inhabitants and earning the "mink and manure" belt. In the 80s and 90s, Sandton City became Johannesburg's second-largest Central Business District, symbolising the city's shift toward what it is today.

Sandton Central is located close to popular areas such as Midrand and Rosebank. By car, Midrand is 18 minutes (17,5 km) away via Ben Schoeman Fwy/Pretoria Main Rd/M1, and Rosebank is 13 km (6.2 km) away via M9. Getting to OR Tambo International Airport via N3 Eastern Bypass/N3 takes approximately 27 minutes (28,9 km).

Residents of Sandton Central can easily commute to Centurion, Pretoria, Rosebank, and OR Tambo International Airport by using the Gautrain.

The climate in Sandton Central is pleasant and temperate. The coldest month is July, with average highs of 17.9°C and lows of 6°C. December is the warmest month, with an average high temperature of 27.5°C and a low temperature of 16°C. Sandton receives up to 262 mm of precipitation a year.
