Sandton began to evolve in the 1960s when it became a distinct municipality, drawing wealthy inhabitants and earning the "mink and manure" belt. In the 80s and 90s, Sandton City became Johannesburg's second-largest Central Business District, symbolising the city's shift toward what it is today.

By car, Midrand is 18 minutes (17,5 km) away via Ben Schoeman Fwy/Pretoria Main Rd/M1, and Rosebank is 13 km (6.2 km) away via M9. Getting to OR Tambo International Airport via N3 Eastern Bypass/N3 takes approximately 27 minutes (28,9 km).

Residents of Sandton Central can easily commute to Centurion, Pretoria, Rosebank, and OR Tambo International Airport by using the Gautrain.
