A brief history of the area
The village of Oudtshoorn was first established in 1847 on the farm Hartebeest Rivier, and it was founded as a kerkplaats (church farm) by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1853. Baron Pieter van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, who arrived in South Africa in 1741 and was appointed Governor of the Cape in 1772, is honoured by the name of the town.
