The town was named for a prominent landowner in the region, a farmer by the name of General Hendrik Schoeman, "Hartbeespoort" means "gateway of the hartbees"(a species of antelope) in Afrikaans. Hartbeespoort Dam, built in 1923, supplied the city with agricultural water and catalysed its rapid expansion into a tourist hotspot.

Tambo International Airport will take 1 hour and six minutes (93,2 km) via R511 and R21.
