On the northern bank of the Umgeni River, the family-friendly suburb of Durban North begins. Known as a suburban mecca and entertainment hub, Durban North is a safe and sought-after neighbourhood situated just before Umhlanga. 

A brief history of the area

The owners of the Durban North Estates Company, a property development business, purchased a large piece of land known as the Prospect Hall Sugar Estate in 1927. They developed the land into a residential suburb which began with Northway. After completing the iron girder Athlone Bridge across the Umgeni River, Durban North evolved rapidly followed by Virginia in the 1950s and Glenashley in the 1970s.

Durban North residents are able to reach King Shaka International Airport within 26 minutes (25,8 km) via the N2 and can make their way to Virginia Beach, 6,5 km (13 minutes) away via the M4. A trip to Gateway Theatre of Shopping will take roughly 17 minutes along the R102 as it's 13,4 km away.
