Kenilworth Upper was originally part of Stellenberg farm, which Simon van der Stel gave to his son Frans in the 1800s. Lord Charles Somerset, the Cape Colony Governor, lived on a farm in the upper area between 1814 and 1824. After the racecourse and train station were built in 1882, mansions were constructed west of the racecourse to meet increasing housing demand.
