Westdene at a glance

According to Gijsbertus Hoogendoorn's, research paper: Critical perspectives on the (re)development of Westdene, Bloemfontein, during the South African War (1899-1902), the town council of Bloemfontein contemplated plans to develop new neighbourhoods, as residential accommodation was in short supply.
So, in October 1901, the council decided to develop what was then known as the "Western Extensions", later to be known as Westdene. Westdene was initially developed for lower income residents. It is furthermore speculated that the types of lots in Westdene were developed as an alternative to the agricultural plots which were being established around Bloemfontein from 1903 onward. As a whole, Westdene, during the first decade of the twentieth century, displayed a predominantly residential character.
Over the past decade a form of gentrification has taken place in the northern part of this neighbourhood. Young, upwardly-mobile professionals have created waves of neighbourhood renewal and change by buying up large parts of the housing stock. Some have chosen to significantly renovate and modernise their homes and some not, leaving a compelling sight of simultaneous regeneration and degradation visible.
Westdene is also known as a prime entertainment area in the city, with the famous Second Avenue, which is lined with restaurants and night clubs, constantly filled with the people looking for a good time.
Westdene has become a neighbourhood in which entertainment amenities and art-orientated facilities are connected to corporate businesses and restaurants and exist within the context of old and modern suburbia.
