Secunda

This Mpumalanga town is a prominent industrial and commercial centre. Surrounded by coalfields, Secunda's horizon is framed by massive cooling towers, high chimneys and steel constructions. A brief history of the area

When the 1973 oil crisis hit, there was a need to make South Africa less dependent on the importation of crude oil. This gave birth to Secunda. Secunda's name comes from the Latin word 'secundi' meaning second. It was the second Sasol extraction refinery producing oil from coal, after Sasolburg.
