Troyeville at a glance

Troyeville in Johannesburg was founded in 1939 at a time during the gold rush when people were moving away from the mines to build their homes and churches. Troyeville was one the original Witwatersrand farms. Today it is a sloped suburb situated on the eastern edge of the city CBD.

Troyeville has Bertrams and Bezuidenhout Valley to its North, Fairview and Jeppestown to the South, Kensington to the east and Ellis Park and Doornfontein to the west of it.

Troyeville is on the main artery to Oliver Tambo International Airport, and it will take 18 minutes (19 km) via the R24. And, 21 minutes (14,8 km) to Sandton via the De Villiers Graaff Motorway / M1. 

It is a mere eight minutes (2,7 km) from Johannesburg CBD via Albertina Sisulu Road and Commissioner Street. And, 45 minutes (55,9 km) from Pretoria Central via the M1, Ben Schoeman Freeway / Pretoria Main Road / N1.

Climate  

Troyeville in Johannesburg has a subtropical climate, which means warm summers and rainy winters. The temperature in July drops to a low of around 9°C. It is the coldest month of the year. During the summer month however the temperatures can rise up to 32°C. The hotter summers bring with them rains and regular heavy thundershowers. 

Education in the area

Troyeville Primary school, Hillview private high school, Redeem creche for Kindergarten are all in Troyeville itself. Within close proximity is Yeoville Community School. As well as the CJC, Central Johannesburg Technical Institute, which is a further education and training centre for NQF qualifications 2 - 4. It can be found in Pretoria Street in Troyeville. 

Jeppe Boys High school is only 3 minutes (1.5 km) away on Roberts Avenue. And Jeppe High school for girls is 4 minutes (2.4) km away. 

Shopping Centres

Troyeville is known for community living and convenient shopping. There are local stores which include Blessing supermarket, Cash Meat Market a butcher shop and deli, Cassava Supermarket, and Wonder Supermarket. There are also many trading stores and spaza's. Or you can head to Jeppes town to the mall. Or to the suburb of Kensington to the Darras Centre. Eastgate - super mall with all the major retailers is only 9 minutes (5.5) km away. And Park Meadows Lifestyle mall is only 10 minutes (5.5) km away from Troyeville.

Medical & Health

There are medical clinics and general practitioners in the area. The closest hospitals include   Edenvale Government Hospital. Life Roseacres General Hospital and the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg academic hospital, an accredited general hospital situated in Parktown. 

Restaurants

The Troyeville is one of the oldest restaurants in Johannesburg and is known as one of the best places to eat. A great sports venue with its many TV's, a perfect place for lunch before a game at Emirate Airline Stadium (Ellis Park Stadium). Rooftop bar and stunning views over the city skyline. It offers Portuguese cuisine as well as SA inspired and other options to cater for all tastes. There are also market stalls, and street food is available in Douglas Village.

Special Attractions

Troyeville is home to Emirates Airline Park, better known as Ellis Park Rugby Stadium. The stadium is also home to the Emirates Lions. Ellis Park stadium was constructed in 1928. It hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup as well as the 2009 FIFA Confederation Cup. 

The Troyeville hotel has been upgraded, and there have been attempts to clean up the area and upgrade security.
