Auckland Park lies north of Johannesburg's CBD and west of Braamfontein on either side of Empire Road, where it becomes Kingsway. Although it is one of Johannesburg’s older well-established suburbs, it has become a trendy and upmarket suburb of the city.
Auckland Park was laid out in 1888 and developed by John Landau, a New Zealander. He named the area Auckland Park as it as it reminded him of his home in Auckland. The names of the streets, such as Richmond, Twickenham, Ditton, Wargrave and Kingston, were all related to places along the Thames.
At the turn of the century Auckland Park was an area that was regarded as being rural and ‘out of town’. It was popular at weekends when the gentry of Johannesburg would visit their ‘country’ houses, the hotel, the boating lake (now the site of the Johannesburg Country Club) and a horse racing track (the current site of UJ).
Today Auckland Park has a cosmopolitan population with an interesting mix of nationalities and cultures and residents of the suburb enjoy a vibrant lifestyle in a convenient location close to all amenities. The University of Johannesburg and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) are located in the suburb, giving it a large student, academic, creative and professional population.
The centre of the suburb has many attractive sidewalks with a wide selection of cafes, restaurants and interesting shops. The adjacent suburb of Melville is chic and trendy adding to the vibrant and energetic ambience of Auckland Park.
Numerous highlights within the suburb of Auckland Park include several well-known art galleries and the magnificent theatre at the University of Johannesburg, which holds various exciting events from classical music concerts to musical theatre. There are some fascinating architectural styles in some of the older homes in the area and many have been restored to their former glory.
The heart of Auckland Park is undoubtedly the Johannesburg Country Club. Founded in 1906 it has always been a noble landmark on the social landscape of Johannesburg and it continues to offer a range of social and recreational activities. The club’s tall, imposing oak trees stand as monuments to an establishment rooted in the heritage of Johannesburg, which still flourishes in the new century.
Auckland Park is easily accessible from Johannesburg’s major highways with easy access to the M1 and it is only 30 minutes away from South Africa’s biggest airport, OR Tambo International.
Auckland Park property is an excellent investment especially for those people who work or study in or near the suburb. Everything that a resident could possibly require is within easy reach of Auckland Park. Seeff Properties Randburg has a wide range of sale or rental properties in this highly sought after upmarket area – with a good selection of Auckland Park houses and freehold or sectional title apartments, townhouses and guesthouses.
