Life in Rondebosch

Category News

Rondebosch is home to the main campus of the University of Cape Town, making it a suburb that’s full of student life and energy. The suburb is mainly residential with shops dotting the main road but also includes a small business district.

Where is Rondebosch located?

Rondebosch lies between the slopes of Devil's Peak to the west and the M5 freeway to the east and is approximately 5km from the city center of Cape Town. To the north are the suburbs of Rosebank and Mowbray, and to the south are Newlands and Claremont.

Things to see and do in Rondebosch

Being a predominantly student area, Rondebosch has plenty of places to eat and drink, including restaurants, fast food joints and pubs.

For those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life there are three tranquil parks in Rondebosch including Keurboom Park, Rondebosch Park and Rondebosch Common. The Common is a popular recreation area, perfect for days out with the family and walking the dogs.

And for those Capetonians who just can’t get enough of craft markets there are three wonderful markets in the suburb namely The Rondebosch Park Market, Rondebosch Potters' Market and the Baxter Food & Goods Market in the Baxter Theatre’s garden.

The Baxter Theatre is Cape Town's second biggest theatre complex and has been home to outstanding South African theatre and performance since 1976.

For active types the University itself has facilities for most sports. There are also tennis courts near the University as well as the Western Province Cricket Club. Other facilities include Rondebosch Golf Club and Rygersdal Football Club.
