Hout Bay Museum

Category News

The Hout Bay Museum gives visitors a glimpse into the natural and cultural history of Hout Bay, its people, and its forestry, mining and fishing industries.

The Hout Bay museum, located in Andrews Road, dates back to 1979. It collects, displays, conserves and researches the cultural and natural history of Hout Bay and the surrounding area.

An outing to the museum is a great way to spend a couple of hours finding out about the history of Hout Bay and how it grew into a thriving fishing village. You can peruse the interesting photographs, exhibits, records and stories depicting the area's colourful history. There is a garden where you're able to learn about both the medicinal and edible properties of the various indigenous plants on display. The museum also organizes weekly guided nature walks into the surrounding mountains. Other historical places of interest for you to visit in the area include the forts, the Manganese mine and the St. Peter's the Fisherman church.

The museum plays an important role in education by hosting schools from the area. To arrange school field trips or larger group visits you should contact the museum directly to make arrangements.
