Orania is an Afrikaner town located on the banks of the Orange River in the beautiful Upper-Karoo. It lies on the border of the Northern Cape and the Free State on Route 369, 41 kilometres south west of Hopetown, in a village that once housed construction workers for the Vanderkloof Dam.
The village, originally built and used by the Department of Water Affairs, stood empty and neglected for several years. Today, Orania is a thriving little town and is alive with enthusiasm.

All households in Orania divide their refuse in 5 separate categories: non recyclable, paper, plastic, glass and metal. Solar geysers are compulsory for all new houses built in Orania, while electric geysers are systematically being replaced in the older houses in town.
