The upmarket suburb of Dunkeld is close to Hyde Park, Illovo, Melrose, and Rosebank. Dunkeld's northern border is Bompas Road, while its eastern border is Oxford Road. By comparison, the adjacent suburb of Dunkeld West straddles the east and west sides of Jan Smuts Avenue. There are less than 200 houses in Dunkeld. The suburb has several upmarket apartment buildings and 142 sectional title properties. 

Interesting facts about the history of Dunkeld

The origin of the name of Dunkeld is a small town in the area of Perth and Kinross in Scotland.  The Sandton township was established in 1904, while the Scottish town of Dunkeld dates back to 820 AD.  It was preserved from Viking raids in the 850s and survived the Middle Ages and centuries more to be the quiet Scottish town it is today. 

Bompas Road is one of the main roads in and out of Dunkeld, running from Jan Smuts Avenue to Oxford Road. It was named after Frank Bompas, who was in the real estate business in the early days of Johannesburg's development.

It is a two-minute drive from the suburb of Dunkeld to Kingsmead College, the private girls' school in Rosebank. Pridwin Preparatory school for boys in Melrose is a three-minute drive from Dunkeld. St David's Marist in Inanda is just six minutes by car from Dunkeld. Roedean Senior School for girls is ten minutes south, into the suburb of Parktown. St John's private school for boys is also ten minutes from Dunkeld in Houghton.

The suburb's fantastic location means that private and public schools in the Parks, Rosebank, Houghton, and Sandton are within a comfortable drive.

Rosebank Clinic is a private hospital less than five minutes from Dunkeld and is likely the most convenient for residents. The renowned Netcare Milpark Hospital is also a private hospital nearby, a ten-minute drive by car.

The shopping district that is the Rosebank Mall, the Zone @Rosebank, and The Firs, Rosebank is barely two minutes from Dunkeld and offers every convenience, whether you are running errands, need to do some shopping, or are looking to enjoy a meal out.

The Wanderers Club Sports Complex is near Dunkeld and offers sport-lovers and sports enthusiasts plenty of opportunities to enjoy all things sporting. The Club was established in 1888 and is situated five minutes from Dunkeld, in Illovo.

Distance to airports, main roads, and the CBD

Dunkeld is on the doorstep of the business nodes in Illovo, Rosebank, and Melrose. Dunkeld is near the Sandton CBD (five kilometers away) and the Johannesburg CBD (ten kilometers away). The Gautrain station in Rosebank makes commuting to Centurion or Pretoria easy by way of the Gautrain, a top-class train service in Gauteng.

The Gautrain can also be used to travel to OR Tambo International Airport. Dunkeld residents often choose to drive to the airport instead, as it is a comfortable 26 kilometers away. Lanseria Airport is 32 kilometers from Dunkeld to the west and is most often used for domestic flights to Cape Town or Durban.

Weather in Dunkeld

The rainy season in Johannesburg, where Dunkeld is found, is over the summer months. While there are "rainy days" once in a while, the rain is usually in the form of brief but impressive afternoon thundershowers. The area is prone to lightning strikes, and golf courses, schools, sports fields, and outdoor venues almost always have lightning warning systems.

The winters are dry and relatively mild for most of the day. The sun shines and warms things up, but early morning and night-time temperatures fall to single digits (Celsius). It is common to see frost-covered lawns and sports fields on your morning commute to work or school during the winter months.
