Howick at a glance

A quiet suburb situated south of KwaMevana and northwest of the commercial centre of Merrivale, Howick offers its residents a peaceful and serene living country life.

Home to the magnificent Howick Falls, the area is dominated by the natural beauty of rolling hills, lush greenery and curious wildlife. Properties in the area are spacious and inviting to its splendid surroundings making it the perfect place to live.

A brief history of the area

The town began in 1850 when a proclamation appeared in the Natal Government Gazette, offering 36 village allotments on the Umgeni Waterfall Drift for sale. Government officials decided to name Howick in honour of Earl Grey, who was their Secretary of State for the Colonies in London and had recently acquired the title, Lord Howick.

It is possible that the location of the first crewed flight in the world took place in Howick. Evidence exists that a John Goodman Household flew a self-made glider in 1871 and again in 1875 on the outskirts of Howick, close to Karkloof. Although the actual distance flown and altitude achieved differs from source to source, what has been verified is that the distance flown was further, and the duration also longer, than either of the flights made by Lilienthal or the Wright brothers.
