A brief history of the area

Until the early 19th century, Zonnebloem (which is Dutch for sunflower), was farmland. At that point, it became a suburb largely inhabited by merchants, labourers, immigrants and freed slaves. It was during the Apartheid era that Zonnebloem gained its infamy. The area was declared "Whites Only" and thousands of residents were forcibly displaced from District Six, which is part of Zonnebloem.

Climate

As part of Cape Town, Zonnebloem enjoys warm, dry summers and experiences most of its rainfall in the colder winter months. A typical summer's day can go from a minimum of 17°C to a maximum of 29°C. In the winter months, minimum temperatures are commonly around 11°C, getting up to a maximum of 20°C.

There is a range of healthcare options in the vicinity. Mediclinic Cape Town is a 10-minute drive away via the M3, and it will take roughly the same amount of time to get to Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital. With Cape Town's city centre just a stone's throw away, you'll never have any problem finding a doctor, dentist, optometrist or any other specialist that you or your Zonnebloem-based tenants may require.

1. District Six Museum

2. Bo-Kaap
This neighbourhood is a special attraction in it's own right, and a simple stroll will show you - and the many international visitors that you will find there - why this is so. Previously known as the Malay Quarter, the Bo-Kaap dates back to the 1760s when the slave trade was rife. Houses in Bo-Kaap were leased to slaves, and the ruling was that all houses had to be white. When this ruling was lifted and former slaves were permitted to buy their homes, the community celebrated by transforming the neighbourhood into a smorgasbord of colour.
