Zonnebloem at a glance

Zonnebloem is a number of things: it is a suburb steeped in the history of our country and its struggle; it is a picturesque precinct in Cape Town's city bowl and it is a fabulous place to own property - whether you're looking for your next home or an investment property. With chic apartments and character-filled free-standing homes, there's truly something for everyone.

A brief history of the area

Until the early 19th century, Zonnebloem (which is Dutch for sunflower), was farmland. At that point, it became a suburb largely inhabited by merchants, labourers, immigrants and freed slaves. It was during the Apartheid era that Zonnebloem gained its infamy. The area was declared "Whites Only" and thousands of residents were forcibly displaced from District Six, which is part of Zonnebloem.

Climate

As part of Cape Town, Zonnebloem enjoys warm, dry summers and experiences most of its rainfall in the colder winter months. A typical summer's day can go from a minimum of 17°C to a maximum of 29°C. In the winter months, minimum temperatures are commonly around 11°C, getting up to a maximum of 20°C.

Special attractions

1. District Six Museum
During the Apartheid era, thousands of residents of District Six suddenly found themselves removed from their homes based on the colour of their skin. Discover their stories at the District Six Museum and learn what life was like here.

2. Bo-Kaap
This neighbourhood is a special attraction in it's own right, and a simple stroll will show you - and the many international visitors that you will find there - why this is so. Previously known as the Malay Quarter, the Bo-Kaap dates back to the 1760s when the slave trade was rife. Houses in Bo-Kaap were leased to slaves, and the ruling was that all houses had to be white. When this ruling was lifted and former slaves were permitted to buy their homes, the community celebrated by transforming the neighbourhood into a smorgasbord of colour.
