Woodstock Cave Hike

Category News

For some of the best views of the beautiful Mother City, look no further than the Woodstock Cave Hike.

This outdoor adventure is the perfect thing to do when you don’t want to spend money and simply want to get back in touch with nature after a stressful week.

The Woodstock Cave is one of the city’s largest caves, 50 metres wide and 15 metres deep, and is about halfway up Devil’s Peak. It is accessed through Tafelberg Road or Rhodes Memorial. Both are moderate hikes and take roughly an hour (one-way).

The hike offers you a fun way to stay fit and have fun at the same time. Be sure to pack snacks and water for a relaxing picnic as you take in the spectacular views. If you decide to hike on a hot day, wear sunscreen and a hat as the majority of the walk is exposed.

Besides the exquisite views, the cave offers incredible sights of its flora. In the summer months you’ll see thousands of Watsonia, pelargoniums and other flowers in bloom. During winter, a waterfall cascades from its upper lip.

For those looking for a fun activity to do with family, the hike is appropriate for ages 12 and up. Dogs are allowed.

In the interest of safety, it’s best to hike to the cave in a group, leave valuables at home, wear good hiking shoes and take a first aid kit. Call Mountain Rescue if you get lost or injured: +27 (0)21 937 0300.
