Looking for a new and extremely different place for lunch? There is a restaurant at Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison called ‘Idlanathi’ which means ‘eat with us’. It is also known by its nickname ‘the mess’.
According to the restaurant itself: "Experience the exquisite thrill to be in the historical vicinity of the legendary and notorious Pollsmoor Prison. Dine in style on local affordable meals and grills, specially prepared by Pollsmoor cooks and chefs.”
Pollsmoor holds some of South Africa’s most dangerous criminals and also happens to have a great restaurant that serves delicious breakfast and lunch. Your food is prepared and served by low security prisoners under the surveillance of prison guards. And it’s all for the good cause of prisoner rehabilitation as they are taught skills that will enrich their lives after prison.
The waiters, in their orange prison uniforms, are friendly and happy to share their stories about what they’re in for.
The budget-friendly menu includes fish and chips, chicken curry, burgers and steaks, farmstyle breakfasts, sandwiches, stews, lasagna and more.
The Pollsmoor Restaurant Idlanathi also offers catering for functions.
