The Wallend-Air Paragliding School was established in 1987 by Pete Wallenda. They offer introduction tandem flights, paragliding courses and various events.
The tandem flights are done with a fully qualified pilot and are the perfect introduction to the world of paragliding. The passenger or student is strapped into the harness in front of the tandem instructor who is SAHPA certified and TFI licensed. Prices for a tandem flight range from R1300 - R2650.
The launch sites Wallend-Air uses are either Signal Hill, Lion's Head, Hermanus or Porterville.
They have GoPro cameras to document your experience which cost an additional R300.
The flight durations depend on the weather and the distance travelled, and normally take between 5 and 20 minutes.
The courses on offer include the Introductory and Basic Licence courses. The Introductory Course costs R4500 and lasts 2 days. It introduces you to the world of paragliding and after the course you can choose to continue with the 9-day basic licence course. You will get to know the equipment, features and controls; learn to control the glider in different wind conditions; learn how to conduct safety checks; practice pull-ups; and do ground skimming flights off the dunes in Wilderness.
The Basic Licence Course costs R16470. The basic licence is the minimum requirement to legally fly without supervision or instruction. On top of what you already learn in the Introductory Course you will also learn the importance of underrunning the glider, go for a tandem flight, complete a minimum of 35 solo flights, complete all manoeuvres required, learn to unpack and repack your equipment and take the basic licence test.
