What made the gallery what it is

Originally built as a prison and police headquarters in the 1840s, Rust-en-Vrede has a rich historical background. Durbanville's first Village Management Committee and council meetings were held in this building later as a magistrate's court. The building was sold to Mr Robert John Meneely in 1927, a clockmaker, who transformed it into four semi-detached houses.

The property became known as The Oaks, Ingle Nook, My Vreugd, and The Retreat, adorned with Mr Meneely's extensive collection of antique clocks. After their passing, the Municipality acquired the estate in 1978, initiating the restoration process. In 1981, the Durbanville Cultural Society was established, managing the building as an Arts and Culture centre, including a Gallery, Clay Museum, Art Studios, and the YOCO Eatery coffee shop.
