Tokai Forest is a perfect destination for nature lovers and sporty types to relax and partake in some of their favourite activities.
The forest is perfect for hiking, running, dog walking, horse riding and mountain biking. It is also an ideal location for braaiing and picnicking with family and friends. Tokai Forest is, in fact, said to be the best outdoor braai spot in Cape Town.
At the base of the forest you'll find the Tokai Arboretum. The arboretum dates back to 1885, holds well over 200 different species of trees including Californian redwoods, cypresses, pines and oaks of various ages. There is also a delightful tea garden called Lister’s that serves a variety of refreshments.
Tokai Forest also attracts birds of all kinds and baboons. And be sure to keep an eye out for edible mushrooms.
Various hiking trails begin at the Arboretum and one of the more popular ones is the hike up to Elephant’s Eye. It’s a hike that the whole family can enjoy and the views of False Bay are truly spectacular.
The Tokai Forest is well known for being a mountain bikers paradise with trails that are truly unique. The TokaiMTB trail crew is a volunteer group that is responsible for negotiating MTB access in the forest and encourages riders of all skill and age levels to participate.
It is important to note that safety is something to be aware of when visiting Tokai Forest and to always go in a group.
