Thrive believes that every person is able to make a difference when it comes to benefiting the environment and the community residing in it.
Their focus is on achieving zero waste, local food production, clean water, energy efficiency and a rich bio-diverse environment.
The local restaurants at Bay Harbour Market in Hout Bay have been praised by Thrive for successfully conserving the environment through the practices of recycling, buying locally and implementing water-wise solutions as part of the For the Good of our Hood campaign.
“We are very proud of our local community when just a few months after launch, 31 of the 65 restaurants in Hout Bay have already received accreditation,” says Thrive’s Nontsikelelo Martel, “and some restaurants have even gone beyond the call by introducing water-saving measures as well.”
“The organic waste from some restaurants has been transported by a local resident, thus creating some business for him. A few restaurants take their recyclable waste to a local recycling co-op, the Hout Bay Recycling Co-op at the waste drop-off. This helps the co-op with the volumes they are able to sell to the recycling company that collects from them.”
Martel says there is also a WastePlan contractor operating in Hout Bay through the City of Cape Town’s Think Twice initiative, which collects recyclable material as a free service to residents of Hout Bay and she encourages all households in Hout Bay to make use of this service.
