Checkers has launched a new collectable campaign, swapping out their Little Shop mini products for eco-friendly Little Garden seedling kits.

The aim of Little Garden is to get children and adults to spend quality time together outside and learn about food sustainability, as they tend to their seedlings and grow their own fresh herbs, veggies and flowers.

Checkers has also pledged to plant sustainable food gardens in the communities it serves.

According to Checkers, “When communities flourish, everyone benefits. That’s why we are committed to growing and nurturing local communities – helping them to realise their full potential and ensuring a bountiful and prosperous future for all. The communities we interact with daily through our stores are at the core of our business and their well-being affects our success.”

Customers will be rewarded with one Little Garden seedling kit for every R150 spent in any Checkers or Checkers Hyper store across South Africa. There are 24 different seedlings to collect including eight veggies, eight flowers and eight herbs. Each seedling kit includes a small biodegradable pot, a soil pod, seed paper and a pop-out name tag.

All the materials used in the Little Garden seedling kits are compostable or recyclable: the biodegradable pots are made of wood pulp and peat; the seeds are all natural and the soil pods are made of coconut husk.

"Checkers is very conscious about the drought that is affecting large parts of South Africa and continues to encourage consumers to save as much water as possible. Despite the severe water shortages‚ we still need to produce food and Little Garden is a great opportunity to learn more about growing herbs and vegetables in drought conditions. The Little Garden seedlings fortunately require very little water - each seedling will use a maximum of 250ml of water (grey water is suggested for this purpose) until it needs to be repotted. A number of the Little Garden seedlings are also drought-tolerant‚ including thyme‚ rocket‚ chives‚ onions‚ radish‚ Swiss chard‚ cornflowers‚ dianthus and English daisies," said a Checkers spokesperson.
