The Boys & Girls Club of Protea Glen is empowering local youngsters

Category Area Focus

The Boys & Girls Club targets social concerns and addresses the needs of young people of Protea Glen. It aims to challenge societal norms of learning while also contributing to a programme that benefits local children and addresses the many needs of Johannesburg's kids. The club offers after-school programmes in a secure, well-organised environment.

Since the opening of the second clubhouse in Protea Glen in 2016, there has been consistent growth in other Johannesburg neighbourhoods due to the demand in educational programs. The plan to create a Boys & Girls Club was born after hearing about its success and potential. The Boys & Girls Club offers a safe setting for children to develop their talents and abilities. As a result, hundreds of local youngsters now consider the Boys & Girls Club of Protea Glen a second home.

The club's initiatives to help learners

Boys & Girls Club, also known as BGCSA, is a non-profit organisation that offers educational, artistic, technical, practical, athletic, and community development programmes. The time-tested model of Boys & Girls Clubs of America is adopted by BGCSA, which employs their technical assistance to advance the mission in South Africa.

Over 1,200 of their 2,000+ club members visit their clubs. Every day after school, they provide high-impact programmes in academics, technology, life skills, sports, and the arts while guaranteeing that no kid leaves hungry by offering a healthy lunch in their kitchens.

Taking action on young people's issues

Young children in society are often exposed to the unfavourable parts of culture and society at an early age. And involvement in this group helps protect one against the potentially adverse effects of exposure to such a situation. The children are free to express their thoughts and feelings and act in a way that is authentic to who they are in this setting without fear of being evaluated. Each programme focuses on morals and values such as respect, self-esteem, confidence, compassion, and work ethic.

The program's goal and strategies

The key target areas emphasised by these programmes are academic accomplishments and living a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to the fantastic club, they can engage in various extracurricular activities and sports. They place a lot of emphasis on developing their students with programmes such as Keystone, Power Hour, Reading Eggs and Maths Club to help learners reach their goals.
