Staying active with the Rondebosch Common Parkrun

Category News

Every year, an increasing number of individuals take up running and walking as a quick and affordable way to keep fit. Many people in the community are recognising the need for better lives and are coming together to achieve it. The Rondebosch Common has become a favourite training path in Cape Town. It's an excellent location for 5 km time trials and is popular with runners and walkers.

The Rondebosch Common is a famous urban green spot for recreation in the city. It is also one of the most significant lowland biodiversity treasures in Cape Town. The Rondebosch Common Conservation Area is an important natural habitat, home to about 300 plant species, 80 bird species, and a variety of other fauna, ranging from insects to frogs and small mammals.

What is the Rondebosch Common park run?

Whether you walk, jog, run, or spectate, the Rondebosch Common parkrun allows you to acquire new skills while also improving your health and enjoyment in the great outdoors. This free community event takes place on Saturday mornings and provides a chance for all local residents, regardless of age or gender, to gather on a regular basis to enjoy this lovely park.

You will have the opportunity to get to know your fellow residents in Rondebosch while improving your fitness. There is no time restriction on the activities you can participate in - just register on their website before your first-ever parkrun.

What is the course like?

The flat and fast two-lap circuit travels clockwise, making the final straight into the regularly blowing South-Easterly winds a great challenge. This safe track is run on the pavement beside the roadways.

The track begins halfway down Park Road and travels clockwise around Rondebosch Common to Camp Ground Road. Then, at the traffic circle, turn right onto Camp Ground Road, which becomes Sawkins Road. Turn right onto Klipfontein Road, then right into Milner Road, and then right again into Park Road. Repeat this circle until you reach the intersection of Park Road and Milner Road.

Is it safe?

The Rondebosch Common parkrun is organised by volunteers for everyone's benefit. The circular route provides a beautiful and safe running track in the southern suburbs.

The entire race is done on tarmac pathways, but every area of the course may gather dirt, leaves, and puddles. Depending on availability, marshals or signage will be placed at critical areas of the race.

It is recommended that anybody walking or running with a pram/buggy use extreme caution. When running, be cautious when overtaking and avoid running on the road. When walking, stick to the right and leave enough room for quicker athletes to overtake safely on the left.

Children under the age of eleven must be accompanied (within arm's reach) by a parent or guardian.

Dogs are permitted on a short hand-held leash, with a limit of one dog per person. Earphones are not permitted because they impair your ability to be mindful of other competitors and hear instructions given by our marshals along the course.

How to start running if you are a beginner

Starting out gently and building up gradually is crucial, whether you're new to running or returning after a lengthy absence in order to prevent injury. Here are some pointers to help you get off to a good start:

  1. Get medical clearance from your doctor, especially if you've been injured, are on medicine, or have a medical condition.
  2. Get a pair of running shoes that fit well and are appropriate for your foot and running style.
  3. Warm up before you begin running to maintain your body healthily and injury-free.
  4. Adopt the appropriate running form to improve your running experience.
  5. Keep an eye on your footstrike to avoid any injuries.
  6. Keep hydrated.
