NSRI Pink Rescue Buoy nominated for international award

Category News

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has been nominated by the International Maritime Rescue Federation (IMRF) awards for their Pink Rescue Buoy project. The volunteer-based rescue organisation is being recognised for its simple, yet highly effective rescue campaign along South Africa’s coast.

The Pink Rescue Buoy project was launched by the NSRI as an attempt to curb drownings at beaches with no lifeguards. The institute also found that in many of these cases, untrained good Samaritans attempting to rescue others also end up drowning themselves.

The NSRI has placed 135 bright pink rescue buoys in strategic spots on many unguarded beaches. Clear instructions indicate to beach-goers what steps to take if someone is drowning. The first step is to call the emergency hotline 112, then throw the pink buoy out to the struggling swimmer. Don’t enter the water yourself.

Since the Pink Rescue Buoy project was launched in November 2017, at least 13 people have been rescued by bystanders. “It’s often the simple things that save lives - in this case, the simple act of placing a Pink Rescue Buoy in proximity to a water risk,” says NSRI CEO Dr Cleeve Robertson.

The IMRF will host the awards in Horten, Norway, on 8 November 2018. These awards raise awareness and recognise some of the outstanding individuals and teams involved in maritime search and rescue around the world. They also focus on innovative technologies and rescue products that are released every year.
