Nelson Mandela Day

Category News

Nelson Mandela Day takes place on Nelson Mandela's birthday, the 18th July and is a day where South Africans are called to contribute 67 minutes of community service.

The Mandela Day campaign message is:

"Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes."

The origins of the day date back to 2009 where groups began celebrating Mandela Day and on 27 April 2009, the famous 46664 concerts took place.

This year, 2018, celebrates the Nelson Mandela Centenary and is a call to action against poverty and for South Africans to make the world a better place by doing something good every day. The core vision of Mandela Day is to take action against poverty in a way that will bring about sustainable change.

The campaign urges you make a difference by starting in an area you are passionate about and where your actions will have a lasting impact.

On 17 June former US President Barack Obama will be delivering the 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture on renewing the Mandela Legacy. Official t-shirts will be sold to commemorate the centenary to support the Nelson Mandela centenary initiatives. The campaign behind the t-shirts will include a CEO Challenge where corporate South Africa will be asked to participate in Mandela Fridays where the t-shirts will be worn every Friday at work and in public in order to encourage South Africans to do good deeds for society.
