Mostert’s Mill

Category News

Mostert’s Mill on De Waal Drive was built in 1796 and is the oldest surviving and only complete mill in Southern Africa.

The mill dates back to the country’s colonial days and sees a great many visitors every year. It is now, in fact, considered to be part of the country’s ‘Living Heritage’, and visitors can not only see the mill in action under the expert guidance of voluntary millers, but they can purchase flour created with the mill.

Mostert's Mill is a truncated tower-mill with a revolving cap (thatched roof) that allows the sails to be turned into the wind. It was built according to standards that would help it to survive the strong winds that Cape Town is well known for and there is no doubt that this is what has assisted in the windmill’s survival over the centuries.

Mostert’s Mill is a great attraction for all those, young and old, who wish to learn a little about the country’s history.

Be sure to phone ahead and set up an appointment if you wish to see the mill.

The Friends of Mostert's Mill operate the mill and it is open to the public on one Saturday a month between 10:00 and 14:30.
