Let's be honest: The people in horror movies aren't the brightest. They leave the doors unlocked. They investigate bumps in the night. They split up when things get real."Why would you do that?", you've yelled more than once in frustration. We feel you. At Seeff, we've seen people make real estate mistakes that can be easily avoided. With Halloween creeping up, here are home-buying lessons inspired by your favourite horror films.

1. The Conjuring

Premise: A family move to a secluded farmhouse in Rhode Island. When a demonic entity terrorises them, they seek the help of two renowned paranormal investigators.

Your lesson: Your property will likely be your biggest asset. Always go with an expert. Consult the services of a registered and professional real estate agent when taking your step towards homeownership.

2. Scream

Premise: A year after Sidney's mother is murdered, she and her friends are targeted by a new killer.

Your lesson: Despite her tragic past, Sidney isn't an emotional, fragile disaster. In the movie, she uses her smarts, determination and keeps a cool head to overcome her assailant. Be like Sidney. Remove the emotion from your house hunting and find one you can afford that meets your current and future needs.

3. Paranormal Activity

Premise: A young couple is haunted by a supernatural presence in their home. They decide to set up cameras to document their haunting.

Your lesson: Sure, the couple shouldn't have messed with a demonic presence. But, they do present a good idea. During an open house visit, you should take pictures and videos to help you remember your visit.

4. It (2017)

Premise: An ancient, shape-shifting evil emerges every 27 years. 'It' preys on the town's young in the form of their worst nightmares.

Your lesson: Security is an important factor when choosing your home. Look out for good fencing, boom gates, guards and high-tech security systems. These will keep out the clowns.

5. Annabelle

Premise: Mia and John Gordon are a happily married couple. One day, John buys his expecting wife a rare vintage doll. It isn't long before the doll becomes a receptacle for a sinister presence.

Your lesson: Everyone has different ideas about decorating. As a buyer, it's easy to be turned off by shag carpeting or possessed puppets. These can be changed so be open to hidden potential.

6. Ghostbusters (1984)

Premise: Three parapsychology scientists lose their jobs and start a unique ghost removal service. When an evil is released, they must answer the call to save their city.

Your lesson: When there's something strange in your neighbourhood, it's nice to know you can call the Ghostbusters. Do ask your estate agent about the amenities and services you'll have access to.

7. Pet Sematary (2019)

Premise: Dr Louis Creed and his wife, Rachel, relocate from the city to the countryside. However, their plans for an idyllic, quiet life are ruined by a mysterious pet cemetery in the nearby woods.

Your lesson: Do your homework. Switching lifestyles is a major decision. The Creeds could easily have spoken to their neighbour, Jud Crandall, to learn more about the area and its unusual history.

8. Poltergeist (1982)

Premise: The Freeling family are your typical suburban family. That is until their home becomes a swirling supernatural sideshow. Spoiler alert: It turns out they're living on an ancient cemetery. Oops.

Your lesson: When buying voetstoots, look out for skeletons in the closet. Be sure to do a thorough home check before signing the offer to purchase.
