The museum occupies an entire city block and was initially established to house the City Council of Pretoria's magnificent art collection, which has been developing since the early 1930s.
The intention behind the establishment of the art museum
The Pretoria Art Museum aims to collect, document, and preserve outstanding pieces of South African art. It also has to deal with art research and putting together shows from the permanent collection. Educative programmes accompany significant international and national travelling exhibits from various groups.
Collections you can't miss when visiting
Several works by Walter Battiss, a South African artist widely recognised as the foremost South African abstract painter and inventor of the bizarre "Fook Island" concept, are among the gallery's permanent collection highlights.
You will see ceramics from the Corobrik Ceramic Collection and some ceramic pieces from the Pretoria Art Museum's collection that have been shown to the public for a long time.
The museum has a collection of works by several great artists, including seven Rorke's Drift ceramics in addition to works by Esias Bosch (1923-2010), Lucie Rie (1902-1955), and Tim Morris (1922-2017). Ephraim Ziqubu, Elizabeth Mbatha, and Dina Molefe are just a few talented artists in the exhibition. Part of the Corobrik Collection, shown in the Pretoria Art Museum ceramic gallery, will be loaned to the University of Pretoria.
Since many other museums already had large collections of European art, it was decided that the Pretoria Art Museum would focus primarily on South African art. It now has pieces by Pieter Wenning, Frans Oerder, Anton van Wouw, Gerard Sekota, Judith Mason, and Henk Pierneef.
Open days for exhibition viewing
The public can witness guided tours from Tuesdays through Fridays between 10:00 and 13:00, and it takes an hour to explore the museum. With entrance fees ranging from R22,00 per student (access cost of R7,00 included) to R42,00 per adult (entrance fee of R25,00 included). Local and international exhibits are in the museum. Guided tours are available for groups of at least ten persons. Reservations are required.
