Experience Monkeyland in Plettenberg Bay

Category Area Focus

Located within Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape, you will find Monkeyland, the world's first free-roaming multi-specie primate sanctuary.

Monkeyland, which is part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA), has been a winner of the Lilizela Service Excellence Awards including Best Visitor Experience 'Wildlife Encounters', Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award - 'Best Major Attraction', 'Best Animal Welfare Initiative' and overall winner of the World Responsible Tourism Awards.

Monkeyland was founded in 1998 by Tony Blignaut, who saw the need for a forest sanctuary that could restore the freedom of ex-captive primates. Many of the primates found in the sanctuary are ex-pets or were once captives in a zoo. Monkeyland provides these primates with a home where they are able to find their own companions and form family groups in their natural habitat.

Monkeyland has an array of species, already endangered or critically endangered, who can now survive and reproduce for future reintroduction into the wild. Essentially, Monkeyland serves not only to rescue and provide happier lives for ex-captive primates but also to safeguard these species against extinction.

What to expect on your trip to Monkeyland

As a visitor, you will embark on a tour of Monkeyland or go on a "monkey safari" as they call it, through the open sanctuary the primates call home. You will be guided through the greenery by an extremely knowledgeable and bilingual tour guide who will be able to accommodate speakers of English, Afrikaans, German, French and Spanish.

On your journey through the lush and leafy area you'll be able to see over 550 primates of various species that includes Capuchin Monkeys, Ring-tailed and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs, Gibbons and Howler Monkeys, to name a few.

Not only do you get to freely walk through the forest where you can get up close and personal with the monkeys but the park also has a 128-metre suspension bridge, which runs through the forest canopy and gives you a chance to see these primates from another perspective.

Monkeyland also offers a restaurant, a souvenir store and a viewing deck.
