Dive in and explore the wonder of Stilbaai's Goukou River

Category Area Focus

Stilbaai, the picturesque seaside town on the Garden Route, is known for its scenic beauty. If you asked the residents or eager holidaymakers about their favourite spot, many would point to the shimmering setting of the Goukou River. This popular attraction is alive with history and full of ecological significance for the town. It's a place where memories are made and from which businesses draw their livelihood.

Running deep with history

The Goukou River is a significant feature of Stilbaai's landscape, separating the east and west sides of the town. It is a roughly 14-kilometre-long estuarine river that flows into the Indian Ocean. The tidal nature ensures deep, clean, and safe water is enjoyed by all who frequent it.

But, where does its name come from? For thousands of years, the ancestors of the Hessequa Khoikhoi populated the area, living off the Goukou River. The river is named after one of their chiefs. Goukou was respected by Dutch colonists for his wealth and wisdom. His domain stretched from the Botriver to the Gouritz River. His son was called the "Groot Jongen" by the Dutch; the nearby area of Jongensfontein is named after him.

A river rippling with fun activities

The ancient Khoikhoi appreciated these blue waters and the admiration is still shared by locals today. The Goukou River is popular for a range of leisure pursuits. Provided you meet the rules of this Marine Protected Area (MPA), you can swim, sunbathe, boat, or kite surf. You can take your kayak out for a paddle or explore the depths of the river through snorkelling or scuba diving. The river is a hotspot for anglers and fisher folk as it is filled with sea bream and cob.

Beyond the water, the river's banks have lovely trails for walking your fur baby or hiking your heart out. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting sandpipers, seagulls, cranes, and other birds. Cycling is also a hobby amongst local Stilbaai residents. In fact, the town hosts the Windpomp Sjerrie Challenge which sees cyclists bike a scenic 50 km and 100 km route along the Goukou River.

Protected for future generations

As Stibaai becomes more popular with families, retirees, remote workers, and holidaymakers, you might be concerned that the river's resources are at risk. Thankfully, the estuary was declared an MPA; since it is permanently open and highly productive, it is an important nursery area for coastal fish. Fishers are restricted as to where they can collect shellfish and bait on the estuary. Jet skis are also not allowed on the estuary, ensuring the waters remain calm and tranquil.

In 2018, the Goukou Resilient River Project was launched to restore the catchment system and combat invasive tree infestations. It has helped clear away these trees and is working to propagate and grow indigenous plant species to be reintroduced into the estuary.

Scenic sights from nearby accommodation

A protected Goukou River is good news for the local businesses that depend on it, such as those selling fishing, sporting, and adventure gear and equipment. Hospitality is another important industry in the area. You'll find plenty of lovely farms, houses, and lodges offering getaways close to the river. Here are some of them:
