Discover Alverstone Wildlife Park

Category Area Focus

For anybody who enjoys hiking, taking photographs, wandering, or watching birds without having to worry oneself about leaving the Upper Highway region, the Alverstone Wildlife Park is the perfect spot.

In 1997, the Alverstone Wildlife Park opened directly opposite Roseway Waldorf School, fulfilling the dream of farmers Lindsay Moller and Ian Buchan to create a reserve. Grasslands, forests, and wetlands make up the 100 hectares that eight neighbouring landowners have together set aside.

Diverse wildlife

The ecosystem of this wildlife park is diversified, and it is home to a vast range of animals and bird species, including a pair of fish eagles. Natural populations of duiker, bushbuck, bush pig, civet, genet, mongoose, and dassies may be found in these environments, while herds of impala, blesbok, blue wildebeest, and zebra have also been added. In order to maintain a healthy gene pool, occasionally some of the animals are sold to other reserves.

The ideal location for kids

Since the Alverstone Wildlife Park is completely fenced in, kids may explore around freely. Many children get to see nature for the first time while also witnessing wild creatures in their native settings at large. The Alverstone Wildlife Park is a fantastic educational location suitable for school field trips and has grown to be a popular location for family picnics and birthday celebrations.

Children may learn from David Padbury of the Wilderness Adventure Programme about preserving the environment, recognising snakes and other reptiles, first aid, and water conservation. These programmes cover things like survival skills, outdoor treks, interactive games, and obstacle courses.

Scenic walking trails

There are several clearly designated paths available for hikers and walkers, with the shortest lasting around an hour and the longest requiring about four hours. To see wildlife, you may take a stroll down into the valley, past a lovely lake, through woodlands, and into the plains. There will be a couple of incline slopes so be prepared.

A picnic and braai area with plenty of restrooms are available for families looking to unwind and enjoy some time in the great outdoors of Alverstone. There is no power at this location; after all, the point of visiting the park is to rest in the peace and quiet of nature.

Haven for photographers

The Alverstone Wildlife Park is a great location for end-of-year events, weddings, and other special celebrations as well as corporate team-building activities. It also offers several excellent locations where photographers may capture a model's ideal pose.

Birding clubs are among the many other organisations that visit the reserve since it is home to an abundance of bird species.

If you enjoy hiking, photography, strolling, or bird watching here is the best setting to do it without having to drive beyond the Highway area. Entry is R15 for adults and R8 for children under 12 years old. Gates can only be opened by appointment. You may reach Tracy at 076 852 0362 or Moya at 082 902 1743.
