Check out Tjing Tjing House, a great spot for Japanese dishes

Category Area Focus

Tjing Tjing House is a four-in-one Japanese restaurant located in Cape Town City Centre, just around the corner on Longmarket Street, in a 200-year-old mansard-designed building. It is a great spot to try succulent Japanese cuisine, defined by its outstanding interior design. Being well positioned near the city centre makes it even better.

Torii, a strong Japanese-influenced culinary eatery on the ground level of Tjing Tjing House, displays famous Yokocho aesthetics while also offering the whole experience of Tokyo life. On the second floor of Momiji, there is a cosy lounge with a small service bar. The third floor houses the Rooftop Bar, which is mostly used in the evenings. Mochi Mochi is a traditional Japanese dessert and pastry shop.

Aesthetically pleasing design

Tjing Tjing House has been the epicentre of Japanese culture in the Cape Town City Centre area since its inception in 2011. It can be seen throughout their interior space, which combines unusual colours while remaining authentic to Japanese culture. The décor gives it a trendy Tokyo vibe, which contrasts with the bare wooden planks that cover the whole floor. The design is distinctive and provides you with a one-of-a-kind experience from the ground level to the bar.

Lose yourself in Japanese food

Momiji is a great spot for the dining experience because it's visually appealing and has a sleek, discreet ambience. There's also plenty of entertainment, with the culinary crew demonstrating their abilities as they serve their take on modern Japanese cuisine. The lounge is enigmatic and modest, with a tiny service bar and the whole Tjing Tjing à la carte menu, as well as the option to design your personalised menu.

Tjing Tjing House's edgy and eccentric street-food-inspired section on the lowest floor is called Torii. It offers traditional Japanese food in a quirky setting inspired by the magnetic energy of the town of Yokocho in Tokyo. Torii's menu offers traditional Japanese breakfast, as well as bento and sando boxes, tempura temaki (hand-rolled sushi), steaming Hirata buns, yakitori (skewered beef), gyoza (dumplings), ramen, and rice bowls.

On the playful side, you can choose from mochi (a chewy dessert made of sweet rice flour) or Japanese cheesecake, airy soufflé pancakes (only on Tuesdays), and taiyaki (a fish-shaped cake available on Wednesdays).

The Rooftop Bar's drink menu features a superb combination of cocktails. You'll be enticed to try more and explore the fascinating world of sake sours, umami bombs, and hot Kasai whiskey tipples.

Mochi Mochi, which was recently founded, is a nice place to savour some of your favourite desserts. It draws much inspiration from the founders' travels and research, which has helped build a tantalising collection of recipes for many Japanese desserts. The menu serves a selection of truffle-sized mochi with classic and familiar flavours. You can also enjoy matcha, black sesame, milk tart, Turkish delight, Tonka bean chocolate, and so on.

If you prefer something more traditional, try the mitarashi dango (skewered mochi dumplings with soy caramel and kinako) or the dorayaki (red bean pancakes). And don't forget about the popular Japanese-style cheesecake (a fluffy souffle-like cheesecake served with miso caramel).

There's more to look forward to

Dazzling lights take centre stage, greeting guests with Japanese calligraphy. The ceiling lights change colour gradually to give a peaceful ambience, setting the stage for an excellent Japanese dish and treats. As you walk around the restaurants, you'll be more fascinated by the magnificent spots and eclectic music.
