The hiking trails in Constantia constitute some of the best to be found in Cape Town. Here are three local favourites.
When hiking it is vitally important that you wear a good pair of hiking shoes, take a fully charged phone and enough water and snacks, and if you choose to take your children or pets along, ensure that you choose an appropriate trail.
Alphen Trail
The popular Alphen Trail is an easy walk that takes about half an hour. The walk begins on Alphen Drive and then winds along the Diep River to the Constantiaberg Mountain. It is an incredibly beautiful trail with a number of bridge crossings and many fantastic photo opportunities.
Vlakkenberg Mountain Hike
The hike takes around 3 hours and is pretty steep. Vlakkenberg Mountain is located in the Table Mountain National Park between Constantiaberg and Constantia Nek. The hike starts at the top of Price Drive in Constantia. You then follow the trail up to the Vlakkenberg summit where you will be met with unparalleled views of False Bay, Hout Bay and Constantia Valley. Keep your eye out on the descent as it is a bit of a bundu bash.
Orange Kloof
The Orange Kloof Hike starts and finishes in the Constantia Nek parking area and takes roughly about 5 hours. You need to be pretty fit to tackle this one as it involves quite a climb. You will need a permit to hike Orange Kloof and will need to book at least two weeks in advance. The number to call for permits is 021 689 4441.
It is recommended that you make the most of your time on Orange Kloof as only one group is allowed at a time. It's possible to book an overnight stay at the tented camp along the trail. The tents are permanent, weatherproof structures and include thick mattresses. It is advised that you do the trail with an experienced guide.
Be sure to explore the gorgeous afromontane forest and take a dip in one of the river pools.
