A little gem called the Drostdy Theatre

Category Area Focus

Resting in the bustling suburb of Stellenbosch Central, you'll find a place of wonder and delight. Within a majestic Victorian building known as the Drostdy Theatre,  the performing arts run wild and imagination comes to life. With shows that leave locals spellbound, it's a must-visit. Here's a look at what the theatre has to offer.

A place where talent can truly shine

The Drostdy Theatre truly is a magical place where the artists who perform there wholly immerse themselves into the space, giving the audience a spectacular show. The theatre takes great pride in its work and you can expect nothing less than the best when booking a seat at one of its shows.

Some stars who have already graced the Drostdy stage include the likes of the Parlotones, Freshly Ground, Marion Holm, Amanda Strydom, David Kramer, Ramon Alexander, Philip Moolman and more.

The Drostdy Theatre officially opened on the 2 March 2015 in record time as its owners, Ingrid Howard and Hano Smit only had six weeks to get the theatre ready for its big debut.

Before it became the Drostdy Theatre, the magnificent Victorian building housed many occupations such as a hotel, a home for the aged, and an office space.

What does the Drostdy Theatre offer its guests?

As a self-funded independent company, the Drostdy Theatre showcases a variety of English, Afrikaans and international talent. It has created and hosted countless recordings, shows, concerts and workshops.

Guests can expect to see musicals, dance shows, dramas, light-hearted jazz evenings and even comedy nights presented at the theatre. When attending a performance, you are offered a light dinner and the chance to unwind with a glass of the finest local wine while the warmth of the cosy fireplace embraces you during the show.

The playhouse seats 250 people and shows are enjoyed in a quaint, intimate space that features many traces of times gone by. It boasts wooden floors that have been soundproofed and a well-sized stage that performers can use as their playground.

Ticket prices range from R60 to R250 depending on the show and you can book your spots through the Drostdy Theatre's website. Productions usually begin at 8:15 pm with Sunday shows taking place in the afternoons.

The suburb that surrounds the theatre

When going to watch one of the performances held at the Drostdy Theatre, you can expect your experience to be wonderfully pleasant from the time you start your journey towards the theatre, right until the end of the show.

Venturing out with the Drostdy Theatre as your destination will prove to be a rewarding journey all on its own as it provides you with a scenic route. As you reach the spot in which the theatre stands, you'll be engulfed by the natural beauty of the Oak trees that line the streets and the beautiful, historical architecture that seems too good to be true. The thing is, it is true and glorious. You could have your own slice of Stellenbosch Central and be able to visit the theatre whenever you feel like it.
