A brief history of the area

Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by Governor Simon van der Stel and is the second oldest settlement after Cape Town. Simon named the area after himself, Stellenbosch means "(van der) Stel's Bush". The town grew so rapidly that it became an independent local authority in 1682. Stellenbosch Central's restored Cape Dutch architecture dating from the 18th and 19th centuries and its oak tree-lined streets are part of the town's magnificent charm.

The distance from Stellenbosch Central to Cape Town International Airport is 28,6 km (32 minutes away) via the M12 and those wanting to visit the Waterfront can reach their destination within 45 minutes (32,8 km) via the N1. The distance between Stellenbosch Central and Strand Beach is 21,5 km (25 minutes) via R44.

Stellenbosch Central residents can expect summers to be warm, dry, and mostly clear while the winters are long, cold and wet. The average daily high temperature in the warm season is approximately 25,6°C while the average daily high temperature in the cool season is around 18,9°C.
