The Seeff Secunda License incorporates Secunda as well as the neighbouring towns of Evander, Kinross, Eendracht, Leslie, Embalenhle, Trichardt and Kriel.
Secunda is not only a mining town, but also has various agricultural and large business activities.
Secunda derived its name from the Latin word "Second" or "Secundi" which translates to second/following. It was named for being the second extraction refinery producing oil from coal, after Sasolburg some 140 kilometres to the west.
Five coal mines, namely Brandspruit, Middelbult, Bosjesspruit, Twistdraai and Syferfontein, form the largest underground coal mining complex in South Africa and annually supply approximately 37,3 million ton of coal to Sasol Synthetic Fuels.
Secunda forms part of the Govan Mbeki Municipality and is also known as Cosmos Country.
Secunda is 180 km from Pretoria and 135 km from Johannesburg and is easily accessible via the N17 that travels between Johannesburg, past Springs, Balfour, Devon, Kinross, Evander, Secunda, Terra Nova and Trichardt, all the way up to Ermelo.
There are two distinctive features around Secunda - they are the massive cooling towers, high chimneys and the steel constructions unique to the South-African oil-from coal industry.
The highest structure in Secunda is the 301-metre-high chimney at the Sasol Three plant, which happens to be one of the tallest freestanding structures in the Southern Hemisphere.
Sasol is the major employer in the area. Every year Sasol has a "shutdown" period where thousands of job opportunities are created.
Over 100 external service providers, contractors and subcontractors are involved, bringing thousands of people to Secunda and surrounds for this period.
The layout of Secunda is unique in the sense that green strips provide easy access for pedestrians and cyclists to schools and the CBD.
One of the most popular hangout spots for families is the Duck Pond. Spacious lawns with green grass, playground for the little ones, braai facilities, a small train run by the Secunda Steamers and the pond itself brings residents and visitors closer to nature.
There is a wide range of properties in Secunda and surrounding areas, including houses, townhouses, farms, commercial properties and a new town, Terra Nova that boasts various security complexes as well as a Retirement Village.
Secunda offers 3 High Schools and 4 Primary Schools, as well as an independent Curro School. The neighbouring towns also offer their own schools.
The Secunda Mall opened its doors in October 2013 and offers most of the major retail stores, including Checkers Hypermarket, Game, Ster Kinekor and various family restaurants.
The Lake Umizi Waterfront offers accommodation, restaurants and events for family outings.
More recent developments towards the West of town include Builders Warehouse and WestPack and more entertainment opportunities in a newly developed area.
Golfers can choose between the Graceland Golf Course, a challenging links course and the Evander Golf Course.
