About the suburb of Witkoppen

Witkoppen is situated just north of the actual Fourways suburb, and it is a fast-developing and relatively affordable area for those seeking easy access to places of work. There are several business and office parks, the Fourways Life Hospital, and several schools in Fourways, making the area a super location for young people starting their careers and entrepreneurs.

Those working in more traditional lines of work and choosing to live in Witkoppen can commute to the business hub of Rivonia via Witkoppen Road and Sandton and Pretoria via the N1, which is just 10 minutes away. The Midrand district is also emerging as a business hub, with several large multi-national corporations relocating their head offices to the area near the Mall of Africa. The Mall of Africa is just a fifteen-minute drive from Witkoppen.  For those working in the mining regions, the far West Rand can be reached using the N14 highway, accessed off William Nicol Drive.   

There are entry-level apartments and townhouses available in the sectional title schemes and more expensive cluster homes in estates.  The estates in Witkoppen provide security, ensuring a safe or lock up and go lifestyle. There are almost 1 000 apartments to choose from in the suburb. Most of the homes in Witkoppen are full title (freehold) homes in estates, some 60% of the suburb, in fact.

Interesting facts about the history of Witkoppen

There is an actual suburb named Fourways, but most northern Johannesburg residents refer to Fourways as a group of suburbs stretching from the Witkoppen / Main Road area in the south out to Steyn City and Dainfern in the north. Witkoppen is associated with being a suburb of Johannesburg's "Fourways" region. Known to be in the heart of Fourways, surrounded by suburbs like Craigavon, Broadacres, and Lonehill, Fourways Mall is in the center of the suburb of Witkoppen.

However, Witkoppen Farm was part of the original grouping of farms that formed the eventual municipality of Sandton. Sandton was established on the farms of Zandfontein, Driefontein, Rietfontein, Cyferfontein, and Witkoppen. Witkoppen was the northernmost farm included in Sandton. To this day, Witkoppen and many of the Fourways region suburbs are still registered under the Sandton municipality established in the 1970s.

Schools in the area

Witkoppen Primary School started a missionary school in 1942, brought about to educate the sons and daughters of the farm workers in the Fourways area. Private donors helped to establish and build the school, including Sir Harry Oppenheimer. Today, businesses in the area continue to support the Witkoppen school (BMW Fourways, Nashua, Builders Warehouse, and more). The JF Kennedy Foundation has been a supporter for years, as has the Anglican Church, which originally donated the school's land. There are plenty of choices for quality-education government (public) schooling within 10 to 15-minutes of Witkoppen, including Bryandale, Bryaneven, and Bryanston Primary, Bryanston High School, and Fourways High School. All of these schools have academic, cultural, and sporting curriculums.

Crawford International in Lonehill and Dainfern College are private schools nearest to Witkoppen. St Peter's Preparatory is an all-boys private schooling option in Paulshof, and Brescia House is an all-girls private schooling option in Bryanston.

Medical facilities in the area

Life Fourways Hospital is on Cedar Road in Fourways and has nearly 200 beds. It is a private hospital with world-class facilities.

Services include anaesthesiology, breast health, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, dermatology, ENT surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, gynaecology & obstetrics, internal medicine, UFE, maxilla-facial surgery, medical oncology, nephrology, neurology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopaedics surgery, paediatrics, paediatric surgery, pathology, plastic & reconstructive surgery, psychiatry, pulmonology, radiology, rheumatology, urology, vascular surgery, as well as many ancillary services.*According to their website.

Shopping centers and malls in the area

Residents of Witkoppen are spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping centres to visit. Mega-mall Fourways Mall in Witkoppen was recently redeveloped and revamped and is now one of the largest shopping facilities in Africa. Cedar Square is also in Witkoppen and has superb restaurants, stores, and even a ski slope experience (popular for children's parties). The Broadacres shopping center, Leaping Frog Centre in Lonehill, and Lonehill Shopping Centre.

  1. Verdicchio, Montecasino for Mediterranean meals in an exquisite setting. Tuscan in style, diners feel as though they're dining in a private Italian wine cellar. Fine dining, the food, and the service are impeccable, and the wine list is impressive.

  1. Saigon Suzy, Cedar Square is known as the "original (and best) Asian BBQ and Rock 'n Roll bar, with authentic Asian-inspired cocktails and street food from all over South East Asia - Thailand, Vietnam, China, Korea, and Japan."

  1. Mythos, Design Quarter is a Greek seafood restaurant ideal for sunny lunches with a crisp white wine.

  1. Roasty's Roadhouse, Fourways is a fun way to enjoy a meal. Milkshakes, cheeseburgers with fries, hot dogs, and more in an authentic retro roadhouse setting.

  1. Picolinos, Witkoppen is a relaxed family pizzeria in the Rustic Timber & Garden Centre, an arts-and-crafts center with a nursery and 5-a-side soccer tournaments. Picolinos has been making their famously addictive pizza for almost 25 years. It's a family-friendly venue with plenty of space for the kids to run around.

Things to do near Witkoppen

Are you looking for weekend activities around Witkoppen? You could visit Montecasino, with its theatres, bowling alley, cinemas, shops, and plenty of restaurants. You could head out to the

Lonehill Nature Reserve, on Crestwood Drive, Lonehill. Open on weekends for walks, hikes, and picnics, with views over Johannesburg, the reserve is home to dassies and various species of birds. You could venture further out to the Cradle of Humankind too.

Distance to airports, main roads, and the CBD

Lanseria Airport is closest to Witkoppen, only 17 kilometers away. Domestic flights from Lanseria are currently to Durban and Cape Town. Private charters and helicopters often fly from Lanseria. The main international airport in Johannesburg, the OR Tambo International Airport, is 40 kilometers from Witkoppen.

It is 13 kilometers into the Sandton CBD and 30 kilometers to the inner-city Johannesburg business district.

Weather in Witkoppen

The summers are long and balmy, typically reaching highs of 34 degrees Celsius. In the summer, there are often afternoon thundershowers. Summer is the rainy season in the Johannesburg area. Factually from December to February, summer extends for much of the year in this area. It warms up from the middle of August and extends into mild autumn until late April. Many homes have swimming pools to enjoy for many months of the year, given the splendid climate.
