Interesting facts about the history of Sandown

There is a namesake, "Sandown," in the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom. It's a coastal town of some 20 000 inhabitants. Its history dates to the Roman era. In 1545 its Sandown Castle was lost during the French Invasion, only 100 years after it had been built.

The prefix "San" also links the suburb and indicates its proximity to Sandton, one of Johannesburg's business hubs, making the choice of name ideal.  The busy business sector of Sandton has flowed over into parts of Sandown in recent years, with some of the larger properties on main roads, such as Rivonia Road, converted and utilized as business premises by some of the bigger commercial enterprises.

Schools in the area

Sandown High School on the corner of Grayston Drive is squarely in Sandown and is known to have the most expensive rugby field in Johannesburg. It's a tongue-in-cheek statement ... the rugby field is perched on the edge of Grayston Drive and Rivonia, where blue-chip companies have their headquarters (making the real estate value very high).

Graystone Preparatory School is on Gillard Street in Sandown. In neighbouring Morningside, Redhill is a sought-after private schooling institution. Within a 10 to 15-minute drive, there are excellent private schools in Benmore Gardens (Crawford), Inanda (St. David's), and Bryanston (St. Stithians, Brescia House, Michael Mount Waldorf School). There are public schools in Parkmore (Montrose), Bryanston (several namesake schools), and Wendywood (Wendywood Primary & High Schools)
