Sandhurst is one of Johannesburg's most prestigious suburbs. This affluent suburb is listed as one of the top five wealthiest neighbourhoods in South Africa and is unsurprisingly home to some of the most impressive properties in the country.

Sandhurst is situated on a north-western slope which offers residents some of the most spectacular views over the city and towards the Magaliesberg. Homes are stately with sprawling gardens, and architectural styles vary from more traditional homes to modern steel and glass constructs. Cluster-style homes are sought after in Sandhurst, which is verdant and idyllic despite its immediate proximity to the world-class Sandton central business district. Many leafy streets are boomed off, and private security companies constantly patrol the neighbourhood. Sandhurst has a low population density, and residents include prominent business people and captains of industry.

Interesting facts about the history of Sandhurst, Johannesburg

Sandhurst is approximately 2,5 square kilometers in size and is located in the heart of Sandton. Few people know that the "Sand" of Sandhurst and the "ton" Bryanston were used to create the district name Sandton.

In a literal translation, "Sandhurst" means a sandy wooded hill. The British region it was likely named after is nowadays best known for the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst, located at the current site in Sandhurst, England, since 1813.

Schools in the area

Children living in Sandhurst can attend several top schools in the immediate vicinity. St David's Marist is in Inanda, on the northern border of Sandhurst, and is a prestigious private preparatory and high school. Sandhurst prep is in the immediate area. Montrose primary school in nearby Parkmore and Hyde Park high school in neighbouring Hyde Park are excellent government (public) schools.

GIBS business school, popular with those doing their MBA, is in nearby Illovo, and Regenesys Business School is in Sandton.

Medical facilities in the area

The Sandton Medi Clinic and Morningside Clinic hospitals are a short drive from Sandhurst. Within Sandhurst itself, the Tara psychiatric facility is on leafy grounds. The Sandhurst Eye Centre is also well-known. There are many dental, cosmetic, nutrition, and other health specialists within the Sandton CBD to cater to your every medical or aesthetic want or need.

Shopping centers and malls in the area

Shopping amenities don't get better than those near Sandhurst. There is Sandton City, with its glamorous Diamond Walk. There are luxury shopping and dining facilities at Nelson Mandela Square. The high-end Hyde Park shopping center is on your doorstep too. For the quick Woolworths run, the Benmore shopping center is a short drive from Sandhurst. Blu Bird in Atholl and Melrose Arch are a 10-minute drive from Sandhurst, as is Rosebank.

Qunu at the Saxon Boutique Hotel and Spa in Sandhurst is an unforgettable dining experience. Qunu describes its offering as a contemporary African grill, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more glamorous setting.

The Butcher Shop on the Nelson Mandela square is a fan favourite, as is Pigalle on the Nelson Mandela square ... known for its Portuguese fare "ideal for a stylish lunch or dinner."

4. Inanda Club polo: Founded in 1935, the Inanda Club is an exclusive club. Well known for its international polo tournaments, it's equally well known for its upmarket banqueting functions.  The restaurant at the Inanda Club is The Terrace. Traditionally styled, it has magnificent views over the polo fields and out through the Sandton City skyline and beyond.

5. The Sandton Library: Boasting almost 100 000 books, the Sandton Library is in Nelson Mandela Square (Sandton City) and is spread over three floors.

Distance to airports, main roads, and the CBD

Sandhurst's prime location is within the suburbs of Sandton, Johannesburg. Sandhurst is a comfortable 30-minute drive to OR Tambo International Airport for travellers and commuting residents and is a 40-minute drive from the Lanseria Airport. Several private aviation businesses are operational from Lanseria Airport.  Sandhurst is located within Sandton, and it is less than a 5-minute drive into the Sandton central business district. The Johannesburg CBD is a 25 to 30-minute drive from Sandhurst.

Sandhurst residents enjoy typical highveld weather patterns ... long hot summers, and short, crisp winters. Rainfall is generally over the summer months, while the winter months are dry. Johannesburg has some of the most sensational sunsets in the world, to be enjoyed on all clear evenings, year-round. Peak summer temperatures are at 33 to 34 degrees Celsius, while the winter nights and pre-dawn temperatures are 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.
