About the suburb of Magaliessig

Magaliessig is one of a group of suburbs in what is known as the Fourways area, including the adjacent official Fourways suburb.  The Fourways area is one of the fastest developing areas in Johannesburg for commercial and residential properties.

Magaliessig is situated just north of the N1 highway (Western bypass) between William Nicol and Main Roads, near Montecasino.  Property is available at accessible prices for buyers entering the property market and wanting good value for money, as well as smaller properties for more mature people wanting to downsize.  The Magaliessig Action Forum is a community group that works to provide a safe and secure area for its residents.

Most homes in Magaliessig are apartments, townhouses, or cluster homes in secure complexes (also known as compounds). There are 165 freehold properties in the suburb too.

Interesting facts about the history of Magaliessig

The name Fourways was derived from the four-way stop at the intersection of William Nicol and Witkoppen roads, which form part of the border of Magaliessig.  The Fourways area was originally a farm owned by the Van Der Walts, who, among other things, grew watermelons.  The Eriksons bought a portion of the farm in the 1940s and built their home, Norscot Manor, now a heritage site, in Magaliessig's neighbouring suburb of Norscot.  The name Norscot was derived from their nationalities, which were Norwegian and Scottish.

We can assume that the name "Magaliessig" came about from the Magaliesberg mountain range nearby and the Dutch or Afrikaans word "sig," which means "in sight of" or "facing."
