Khyber Rock is a very small and exclusive suburb that is popular with wealthier executives and professionals. Lincoln Road, the main road through the suburb, runs from east to west for only about 650 meters. Most of the residential properties in this suburb are within secure estates such as Khyber Rock Estate, with a lot of these homes in the suburb of grand proportions and set in large gardens.

Khyber Rock has 112 freehold houses in estates, but there are 19 freehold homes and 20 sectional title units outside the estates. Khyber Rock is close to the Buccleuch Interchange, so residents can easily access the N1 and N3 highways and the business areas of Sandton, Rivonia, Woodmead, and Midrand.

Interesting facts about the history of Khyber Rock

In 1957, Johannesburg architect Carmel Back and her husband, Harry, bought about 8.5 hectares of wooded hillside land known as Khyber Rock. The couple applied for subdivision rights when they became overwhelmed by demands for the sale of cottages on their property and turned the area into a suburb. The Mediterranean style architecture was the style used by Carmel's designs for the first houses, and subsequent houses had to seek her design approval.

This land is geologically part of an extinct volcanic area and is known for its high mineral and metal content levels in the surrounding rocks. This general area is also susceptible to lightning strikes during the frequent summer thunderstorm activity.

Residents of Khyber Rock have access to a number of well-known schools, including the Rivonia Primary School, which is equipped with quality learning facilities. There is also Wendywood Primary and High School, which are government schools in the neighbouring suburb established in the 1980s and provide a high-level education with quality facilities. Residents also have access to private schools in the area, like Redhill School and King David School.

Khyber Rock and its neighbouring areas offer medical facilities such as Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, which provides comprehensive multidisciplinary medical and surgical services. There are other medical facilities that are just a little farther than this particular medical facility, but within reasonable distance.

Shopping centers and malls in the area

Livingstone Lifestyle Center, which sells quality garden equipment and other household items, is in the area. Other shopping malls, such as the Dunwoody Shopping Center and Woodmead Value Mart, also cater to the residents' shopping needs within a quick drive.

4. Wits Art Museum: is home to an impressive collection of African artworks, including historical and contemporary artworks from South Africa, as well as West and Central Africa. The museum is not too far from Khyber Rock. WAM is about 20 kilometers from Khyber Rock on the freeway.

5. VRoom: This is the ultimate virtual reality playground for kids and adults, where you get an unforgettable virtual reality experience and rental services. VRoom is a 30-minute drive on the highway, but well worth it.

Distance to airports, main roads, and the CBD

Khyber Rock is equidistant from Johannesburg's two major airports. It is 32 kilometers west of Lanseria Airport and 31 kilometers east of Oliver Tambo International Airport.

The Sandton business district is a comfortable 10-kilometer drive from Khyber Rock, and the Johannesburg central business district, where Bank City is located, is 20 kilometers from the suburb.

The climate in Johannesburg, where Khyber Rock is situated, is the typical Highveld climate. It is sub-tropical and warm. Summer is the rainy season. The dry winter season does get cold in the early mornings and late evenings, but the sun shines during the day and warms things up.
