About the suburb of Edenburg                

Edenburg, incorporating the Rivonia extensions, lies to the north of the Johannesburg city center and has become an affluent business and residential area near the growing business hub of Sandton. 

There is often confusion regarding the suburb's name, as Edenburg is often referred to as Rivonia.  Edenburg was one large extension with many smaller extensions to the north, numbered as "Rivonia Extension No. ...." The area became known as Rivonia because the Rivonia Road runs through it to the south.  The name change happened many years ago but has never officially been altered in the Deeds Office.

The development of Edenburg began about 30 years ago when farms and smallholdings started to be subdivided for residential purposes.  Edenburg has since developed into a busy business and residential area. Today, there are over 3 000 homes in Edenburg. Most homes are apartments, but there are nearly 1 000 freestanding homes and clusters in Edenburg.

Schools in the area

Rivonia Primary School is a highly respected public school in the neighbouring suburb of Rivonia. Many children of families living in Edenburg have children attend school at Rivonia Primary. Curro Rivonia High is an affordable private school in the immediate area. Redhill is a large private school in nearby Morningside, which caters to children in pre-primary, primary, and high school.

Medical facilities in the area

Netcare Sunninghill Hospital and Mediclinic Morningside are very close to Edenburg and are both private hospitals. The Sandton Day Clinic is also situated nearby, as are many private offices for doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, aestheticians, and other medical professionals.

Shopping centers and malls in the area

Residents are spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping. The larger malls nearest Edenburg are Sandton City / Nelson Mandela Square. The Cloisters Shopping Centre and Edenburg Boulevard are in the suburb itself. Rivonia Village, Mutual Mews, Rivonia Central, Rivonia Junction, Early Dawn, and The Wedge are all shopping centers in neighbouring suburbs.

Restaurants to visit in Edenburg

For those looking for somewhere fun to enjoy a meal, there is Saigon in the Edenburg Junction. It is delicious, traditional Vietnamese cuisine. Sheiks Palace is known for its Lebanese, Middle Eastern food, belly dancing, and shisha.

  1. Rietfontein Nature Reserve - situated in the nearby suburb of Paulshof, this reserve is a 25-hectare green space in the city. It is popular with hikers and bird watchers. There is a koppie in the reserve, and you will feel like you're out in the countryside, not the bustling city.

Distance to airports, main roads, and the CBD

Rivonia Road connects the suburb of Edenburg to the Sandton central business district. It's a commute by car of about ten to fifteen minutes. The M1 highway is the quickest way to make the twenty-five-minute commute into the Johannesburg inner city district.

Using Cedar Road through the Fourways area is the best way to travel to the Lanseria Airport in the northwest of Johannesburg. It is a thirty-minute route by car. The OR Tambo International Airport is to the east of Edenburg. Using the N1 and N3 highway routes, it is a twenty-five-minute drive to Kempton Park, where the airport is situated.

Edenburg, situated in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, and Johannesburg is at an altitude of roughly 1600 meters above sea level. It is a sunny suburb, and the length of a day in Johannesburg is a minimum of ten and a half hours on the shortest winter day and a maximum of 14 hours of sunlight in the summer.
