Florida is a small suburb located in South Africa's Gauteng Province. The area's defining feature is the beautiful Florida Lake, which is widely considered to be Roodepoort's finest freshwater fishing site. A brief history of the area

Vogelstruisfontein and the farms Roodepoort and Paardekraal were established as mining camps after the discovery of gold in 1881. The suburb was laid out in 1889 and then proclaimed the following year on 14 April 1890. By 1904, it became a suburb of Roodepoort. It was either named after Florida in the USA or the suburb's originator Hendrik van Hoven whose late niece was called Florrie.

O.R Tambo International Airport is a 39-minute drive (50 km) from Florida via the N12 and Johannesburg CBD is 17 km (26 minutes) away via Main Reef Road.

Climate

The climate in Florida is generally warm with the average daily temperature around 28 °C. The summers have a good deal of rainfall in comparison to the winters. With approximately six days of rainfall each month, the remaining days can be spent outdoors.
